The EU could “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it calls “unjustified” travel bans issued by the United States against five European individuals working on combating digital hatred and disinformation, an EU official has said.

EU Officials Condemn US Action as ‘Coercion’

European leaders such as Emmanuel Macron charged Washington of “bullying and threats”, following the travel bans were placed on individuals that were central to efforts to introduce laws governing American tech companies.

“For too long, ideologues in Europe have led organised efforts to coerce US companies to punish American viewpoints they disagree with,” stated the US secretary of state in a social media post. “This government will no longer tolerate such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported France in criticizing the decision.

The restrictions were imposed on Tuesday on an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as several activists fighting false information, including Germany and the United Kingdom.
